AN ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION AS REFLECTED IN TWAIN’S THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER NOVEL

This research aims to find out how the social stratification of Edward and Tom characters
seen in a novel entitle The Prince and The Pauper by Mark Twain, which reveals about the basic kinds of social stratification people mostly have. The theory applied by the researcher in this research is the social stratification of Alex Thio theory which contains three basic of Social Stratification they are wealth, power, and prestige and the researcher also applied sociological approach. Then, descriptive qualitative and library research methods are applied in this research. The data in this research are the dialogues and narratives about the social stratification of Edward and Tom characters. The result of the research shows that the The Prince and The Pauper novel describe about the social stratification of Edward Tudor and Tom Canty characters which cover the three basic of social stratification through behaviour. Then, it can be concluded that there are three basic of social stratification that shows the social stratification, they are wealth, power, and prestige
