SHELLEY’S CRITICISM TOWARD POLITICAL POWER IN THE 19TH CENTURY AS REVEALED IN HIS ENGLAND IN 1819 AND OZYMANDIAS

This research analyzes Shelley’s poems; England in 1819 and Ozymandias which are the description of Shelley’s criticism toward political power in England in 19th century. The researcher used the expressive approach to analyze those poems, supported by background of Shelley life, about political power, the condition of politic and society in England in 19th century, and also figurative language which are useful in this research. In this analysis, the writer also applied qualitative method as research design and it was described by using words. As conclusion, the writer found the criticism of Shelley toward political power in England in 19th century as revealed in England in 1819 and Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Oppressive is one thing that related to political power. It can be happened when upper class people dominated the social life, thus lower class people will feel suppressing by upper class people. Abusive inside society, it can be done by the leader, King, the expression and behavior of King can cause mentally abuse for society. Injustice can be happened by dictatorship of King and it related to tyranny. Actually, there is relationship between King and society which King is as a leader who should be able to lead fairly.
